Rational Choice in Love
نویسنده
چکیده
I WANT TO FOCUS ON A SINGLE WORK OF LITERATURE. It is not directly concerned with war among states, though its author, Choderlos de Laclos, was in fact a soldier, an artillery officer, and an expert in fortifications. It deals with other kinds of war. My goal today is to consider the place of reason—of rational choice in the commonsense version of this term—and, specifically, of rational choice theory, as they play out in the realms of unreason. In order to narrow the field, I have picked love as my example. Within the unreasonable realm of the passions, love is, if not necessarily the most irrational, at least the most often subject to attempts at regulation by theoretical and practical reason. Among the works of literature I study, the one that has struck me as most apt in its juxtaposition of love and rational choice as strategy has been Les liaisons dangereuses, the scandalous novel of 1782 by Choderlos de Laclos. At its turning point, the novel’s two chief characters declare war—another medium in which reasoned strategy, gaming, and the passions meet.

It seems easy to accept that rationality involves many features that cannot be summarized in terms of some straightforward formula, such as binary consistency. However, this recognition does not immediately lead to alternative characterizations that might be regarded as satisfactory, even though the inadequacies of the traditional assumptions of rational behavior standard used in economic theo...
متن کاملRational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration
Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...

متن کاملGod, Love, and Interreligious Dialogue
The monotheistic religions that valorize love typically believe that their love for God should be extended to God's creatures and, in particular, to one's fellow human beings. Yet, in practice, the love of the Christian or Muslim or Hindu monotheist doesn't always extend to the love of the religious other. Precisely how, then, should the adherents of the major monotheistic religions respond to ...
